Module 5 - Sections

Video Summary

After creating a course, you must create at least one section (even for a single class like “3rd Grade Math”).

Purpose of Sections

  • Represent a specific instance of a course within an academic term.

  • Stores all key details:

    • Teacher

    • Students

    • Schedule (time, period, days)

    • Classroom

    • Term-specific settings

Section Setup (Core Fields)

  • Section name/number (e.g., 2026-01)

  • Academic term (e.g., 2026–2027)

  • Classroom (searchable selection)

  • Grading unit group (must match current year; cannot reuse prior years)

  • Capacity

    • Optional enforcement (Pro Tier schools)

    • Can also enable Waitlist (Pro Tier schools)

  • Period (optional but important)

    • Helps organize schedules

    • Used in automated schedule building and sorting

Scheduling Structure

  • Schedule is built using:

    • Classroom

    • Period

    • Start/end time

    • Days of week

  • Sorting priority:

    1. Period

    2. Start time (if no period)

  • Days of week are also used for:

    • Taking Attendance

Gradebook Settings

  • Can inherit school-wide gradebook settings OR use Custom Gradebook Settings

  • If you enable Custom Gradebook Settings, teachers can customize for their section

Teachers & Students

  • Teachers and students can be assigned to the section when it's created.

  • Typically added later (see subsequent videos)

Key Takeaways

  • Sections are required for every course, even single-class courses.

  • They define the real details of a course within an Academic Term.

  • Sections control:

    • Scheduling

    • Attendance

    • Enrollment

    • Grading

    • Communications (Messaging, ...)
