Module 5 - Course Settings, Pt. 3 - Gradebook Settings

Video Summary

Gradebook Settings (Required)

  • At least one gradebook must exist before creating sections.
  • Setup includes:
    • Name (e.g., “Default Gradebook”)
    • Rounding rules (decimal places)
    • Visibility options (hide averages, points, etc.)
    • Assignment visibility controls (hide grades until ready)
    • Optional grade distribution graphs

Grading Configuration (within Gradebook)

  • Grading Categories:
    • Required (at least one, e.g., “Coursework – 100%”)
    • Can support weighted grading (e.g., Tests 50%, Homework 30%)
  • Grading Scale:
    • Defines final grade output (letters, percentages, etc.)
  • Grade Mapping:
    • Optional, not critical for initial setup

Best Practices

  • Start with simple configurations (one category, basic grading scale).
  • Avoid premature complexity (e.g., drop grades early in term).
  • Expand settings (categories, weighting, options) as needed over time.

Bottom Line

  • You cannot properly create courses/sections until:
    • Departments are defined
    • At least one gradebook is configured
  • Course options and classrooms enhance functionality but are not strictly required
