Standards-Based Grading - Editing Courses and Sections

Making changes to existing standards in Courses and Sections

Editing affects current and future sections differently.  Past sections cannot be edited. We've broken down these options into three subtopics:

1) Editing Standards for Future Sections (from the Course > Standards tab)

2) Editing Standards for a Current Section (from the Section > Standards tab)

3) Updating the content of a Standard for a Current Section

Editing both the Course and Section Standards requires a Double Save.

1) Click Apply when you are completed editing the "Select Standards" list and, then

2) Click Save to retain the Edit to the Course or Section info.

The following video covers the first two subtopics (editing standards for current and future sections).  See the subsequent sections in the article for steps to edit section standards as well as subtopic three - updating the content of a standard.

Editing the content of a Standard for a Current Section

Updating the content of a standard (the ID, the Category, the Scale, the descriptions) can only be done at the school level:  Settings > Standards-Based Grading.   These changes flow down to the Course Standards and the future Section standards automatically.  Current and past section standards will NOT change.

If you want to update a standard in a current section, it has to be completed with an indirect method.

  1. Update the Standard (the ID, the Category, the Scale, or the descriptions) at the school-level by navigating to Settings > Standards-Based Grading

  2. The changes will automatically take place in all Courses and future sections using this standard

  3. For current sections to get the update(s), first go to the current sections's Gradebook > Standards tab and ensure there are no Standard markings for any student under that specific standard(s).  If so, you will need to record what those markings are and then delete the markings.  A Standard can only be removed when the markings have been cleared from every student.

  4. Return to the Section Info > Standards tab and remove (de-select) the standard that was updated in Step 1.

  5. Click Apply to close the Select Standards window.

  6. Click Save in the upper right (orange bar) to save the edits to the Section Info.
  7. Click Select Standards again
  8. You should now see the updated standard from Step 1 listed.  Check the box to add it back to your section.
  9. Click Apply to close the Select Standards window.

  10. Click Save in the upper right (orange bar) to save the edits to the Section Info.
  11. Return to the current sections's Gradebook > Standards tab and re-enter the student markings that you removed in Step 3.
