How to enter an incomplete grade and, if needed, edit the Gradebook Settings
If a teacher wants to enter an Incomplete Grade for a student, the Gradebook Settings may need to be edited. If the teacher's particular section uses Custom Gradebook Settings then the teacher can make the necessary adjustments to the Grading Scale described below. If not, the teacher will need to request assistance from their school's ClassReach Admin.
As a teacher, to record an "Incomplete" for an assignment, a grading unit (eg, the quarter) or the final average you must first check the Grading Scale to see if there's an entry for "I" or "INC" which would allow for you to enter the incomplete grade.
These options to enter an "Incomplete" will be reflected in the student's gradebook, it will show to parents and students when they look at the current grades and it will show an "Incomplete" on the Progress Report. This may or may not also show on the Transcript. Admins have another option to enter an "Incomplete" grade override for Transcripts.
If you already have this option in your Grading Scale skip to the entering an incomplete Grade section below.
Grading Scale Changes
To edit the Grading Scale and assign the "I" or "Inc" to a specific percentage value on the Grading Scale complete the following:
- Go to Grades > Settings tab.
- Change the Grading Scale to include a percentage grade option for an Incomplete - something like 0-5%.
When you change the grading scale, ANY percentage grade average from 0 up to 5, in this example, will result in the student having a "INC." If the student has a 3% average for the quarter, their quarterly average will be INC; if a student has an overall average of 2% their overall average will be INC, etc.
The steps for completing the Grading Scale change are to...
1) Edit the Grading Scale Entry for an "F" by clicking the on the right side of the Grading Scale
2) Change the Minimum average to 5
3) Click Save
4) Add a new Scale Entry by clicking in the upper right corner of the Grading Scale
5) Enter "Inc" for the Grade Letter and 0 for the Minimum Average.
Entering an "Incomplete" Grade
There are three different places to enter an "Incomplete" grade in the gradebook:
1) A grade for a specific Graded Assignment
2) An Override Grade for a Grading Unit (eg, 1st Quarter)
3) An Override Grade for the Final Average
Entering an "Incomplete" grade for a Graded Assignment
This takes two steps.
1) Enter a 0 (this could be any number less than five) for the assignment grade
2) Enter "Incomplete" in the comments block next to that grade
In the below example, Rudy Schell received a zero or INC on the Performance assignment. The teacher entered a zero (it could have been a 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and entered "Incomplete" in the comments. The Average currently shows the INC, but once the other graded assignment(s) are entered the average will no longer show INC and will likely show an F or higher based on the various assignment point values. In order to override the averages, see below.
Entering an Override Grade
This will be accomplished on the Grade > Averages tab.
Here you can enter the Override grade for the ...
- Quarter
- Final Average
- Both the Quarter and the Final Average
In the below gradebook, you can see an example of an override grade of INC for Q1 (Snoopy) and override grade of INC for the Final Average (Jack Custis).
- The Q1 override grade of 1% or INC is averaged with the Q2 grade of 78% for a Final Average of 39.5%. If you want the quarterly grade and the Final Average to both be INC, then you would want to override both of them.
To enter the override grade -
- Click on the grade or the yellow space if no grade is entered. You can do this on the grading unit (Q1 or Q2 in this example) or the Final Average.
- Enter the override grade (1, 2, 3 or 4)
You can't enter a zero for an override grade. It will result in an error.
- Click Save
This will vary in appearance on the Progress Report depending on other settings. This is an example where the Band Final Average is INC -
