Hiding Grades from parents and students can mean several things, all of which can be done with the following settings.
There are several options to hide grades. In this article, we will cover the options for teachers and admins to hide grades.
Grade Hiding Options for Teachers
- Hiding Individual Assignment Grades
Grade Hiding Options for Admins
- Hiding Individual Assignment Grades
- Hiding Grades within a specific Grading Unit
- Hiding the Overall Average Grade for a Section
** Grades can be hidden from guardians and students collectively, but not individually.
Hiding Individual Assignment Grades
Both Teachers and Admins can hide/unhide assignment grades when creating the graded assignment such that the when entering the grades, they won't be visible to guardians/students until the admin/teacher specifically makes them visible.
This method of hiding individual assignment grades CAN accomplish the goal of hiding all the grades (assignment, grading unit average, overall average), but ONLY IF the teacher does not make one individual assignment grade visible, whether on purpose or accidentally. If the school desires to ENSURE it's NOT POSSIBLE for grades to be visible, they would need to employ the other two setting methods discussed below to Hide the Grading Unit average and the Overall Average.
Hiding Individual Assignment Grades is accomplished by selecting the "Hide from students" option on any Homework Assignment or Graded Item added to the Gradebook.
Hiding Grades within a specific Grading Unit
From the Settings Page > Grading Units, select the Grading Unit Group and specific Grading Unit in order to hide grades from Guardians and Students. This will hide all assignments and their grades from Guardians and Students.
Hiding Grades from Guardians and Students for a Grading Unit will not only hide the grades, but Homework and Graded Items will also NOT be visible at all. Teachers can still use Lesson Plans, Agendas and Tasks to communicate assignments with students and guardians.
Hiding the Overall Average Grade for a Section
This can be accomplished by adjustments to a section's Gradebook Settings (This may or may not apply to more than one section depending on the selected Gradebook).
- Hide Numeric Averages - this hides the overall average percentage grade
- Grading Scale Adjustment - this hides the overall letter grade
Depending on what you want to hide, you can use one of the above options or both.
Hide Numeric Averages - set this by editing your Gradebook Settings > General Settings by selecting "Yes" for Hide Numeric Averages.
Grading Scale Adjustment - use only one entry to cover the entire scale (0-100 %). Any symbol or letter will suffice. Below you will see two dashes, for example. This set up for the grading scale will show the student's overall letter grade average as "--" regardless of the student's actual grade.
