Module 9 - Gradebook Settings

Video Summary

  • Gradebook settings must be configured before setting up sections/classes

  • Settings control default gradebook behavior and visibility options

Gradebook display options

  • Set decimal rounding for grades

  • Hide/show assignment points from students

  • Hide grades while entering them until ready to publish

  • Enable/disable grade distribution graphs

  • Hide/show numeric averages (letters only if desired)

Assignment categories

  • Every assignment must belong to at least one category

  • Categories can be weighted (example: Tests 50%, Homework 30%, Participation 20%)

  • If not weighting grades, use a single 100% category

  • Option to drop the lowest grade in a category

    • Recommended to leave disabled until later in the term

    • Enabling early may unintentionally drop the only grade entered

Grading scale

  • Defines how percentage averages map to letter grades

  • Example:

    • A = 90% and above

    • B = 80% to under 90%

  • Uses exact percentages, not rounded values

    • Example: 89.9% is still a B

  • Can use letters, numbers, or custom grading labels

How grade calculations work

  • All assignments are point-based

  • Final percentage = points earned ÷ points possible

  • Category weights adjust how averages contribute to final grade

  • Grading scale converts percentages into final grade labels

Grade mapping

  • Maps grade labels to fixed point values
  • Uses point values, not percentage ranges

  • Typically requires all assignments to use the same total points (often 100)

  • Commonly used for standards-based grading or elementary-style systems (E/S/U)

Additional notes

  • Grade mapping does not calculate percentage ranges dynamically

  • Custom grading systems require careful setup and consistent assignment point values

  • Additional knowledge base articles explain weighting and grade mapping calculations in more detail
